Project Description

This project focused on the restoration and re-roofing of the iconic Mackay Hall at Park University, a historic building first constructed in 1886 and a landmark within the Parkville community. The primary goal was to preserve the building's architectural integrity while ensuring long-term durability. The work on this project involved replacing and restoring a variety of roofing systems. Park University is a central architectural and cultural symbol in the Parkville area, making historical sensitivity a top priority throughout the project. The blend of slate tile roofing, restored architectural metal features, and custom spire fabrication made this restoration a showcase of exceptional craftsmanship, attention to detail, and respect for heritage.

Scope of Work

The restoration of Mackay Hall encompassed several key components across the structure. On the 14-pitch front face of the building, 1,100 square feet of existing slate tile were removed and replaced, while an additional 700 square feet on the main tower were re-roofed using natural slate tiles. Both areas were re-sheeted with 3/4" plywood and sealed with Ice and Water membrane to ensure effective waterproofing. The architectural metalwork, including the bell tower, clock tower, copings, and spire, underwent comprehensive restoration-primed, re-patinated, and detailed to maintain the building's historical character. A newly fabricated spire was also custom-built, painted, and installed. On the north-sloped side, approximately 3,000 square feet of GAF Ultra HD composite shingles were installed to blend with the existing aesthetic while improving durability. Additionally, the lightning protection system was fully updated, tested, and reinstalled to ensure continued safety and functionality

Challenge

The scaffolding, trash chute, crane operations for material lifting, and limited space for parking and dumpsters required careful planning and coordination. Despite these obstacles, our team completed the work efficiently through precise scheduling and collaboration with the university. The entire project was completed over a span of five months, ensuring minimal disruption to campus operations while maintaining historical preservation standards.
