Always a highlight of our year, the 10th Annual Free Roof for a Veteran Giveaway winners have been announced. We are always so moved and inspired by all of the stories that come in with the nominations, and choosing 3 people is always such a tough decision. But we know that these three individuals not only need a new roof but have earned it through their service for our country. We chose one Veteran from each of our first three locations- Wichita, Kansas City, and Denver- and will be installing the roof in November around Veteran’s Day. Before that comes, we wanted to share more of these incredible stories!

Wichita- Donald Cunningham

Donald was nominated by his wife Regina. He is an Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom Veteran, starting as a medic and transitioning later into commanding a 120mm Mortar Track. Donald was always known for giving more of himself than anyone when it came to treating fellow soldiers or leading his men in the field. Even after his time in the Army, Donald was there for his fellow people. When he heard that one of his friends had kidney failure, he raised his hand immediately to help. After a screening process, he was selected as a donor, giving himself both literally and figuratively to help a friend.

Kansas City – John Douglas King

Known to his friends simply as Doug, he served in the Army from 1982 – 1989. He started at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso and later moved over the Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonino. During his time, he was an Operating Room Tech while also attending nursing school and continued to serve as an LPN until he left the Army. In October of 2021, Doug and his wife Beckie received the news that their son Aaron was diagnosed with testicular cancer. The cancer quickly spread into the lungs and brain, and a series of infections prevented a transplant of stem cells from taking place. While the future continues to unfold, Doug and Beckie have both continued to help their community in any way possible, whether you are family, friend, or stranger.

Denver – Thester James Whisenton

Thester took a similar path to Doug, starting his Army career In El Paso and later moving to San Antonio. He went to Fort Bliss for his basic training and then Fort Sam for AIG training, where he studied to become a medical corpsman. He served as a combat medic in the 1st of the 26th inventory in Dion Vietnam attached to the Big Red One from July 1966 to 1968. After returning from the Army, he resided at the Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Aurora.
